Population of approximately 6.4 million. Bulgaria has a declining population due to low birth rates and emigration, making it one of the fastest-shrinking countries in the world.

The official language is Bulgarian, which uses the Cyrillic alphabet. English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, and Russian is also understood by some older generations.

The capital and largest city is Sofia. Other major cities include Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, and Ruse.

Bulgaria has a rich history dating back to the Thracians, Romans, and Byzantines. The country is known for its traditional folk music and dance, rose oil production, and Orthodox Christian monasteries. It is also famous for Nestinarstvo, a unique fire-dancing ritual.

The Bulgarian Lev (BGN) is the official currency. It is pegged to the Euro, making exchange rates stable. Bulgaria is expected to adopt the Euro in the future.

Bulgarian cuisine is a mix of Balkan, Ottoman, and Mediterranean influences. Popular dishes include Banitsa (cheese-filled pastry), Shopska Salad (cucumber, tomato, and feta cheese), Kavarma (slow-cooked meat stew), and Tarator (cold yogurt and cucumber soup). Yogurt and feta-style cheese are staples.

Continental climate in most of the country: cold winters, hot summers.
Mediterranean influence in the south: milder winters.
Mountainous regions experience heavy snowfall in winter.

Notable wildlife includes brown bears, wolves, lynxes, golden eagles, wild boars, and European bison. Bulgaria has diverse landscapes, including the Balkan Mountains, Rila Mountains, and Black Sea coast, which are home to many rare species.

Cultural Considerations

Punctuality: Arriving on time is important, especially in business and formal social settings.
Avoid the "no" gesture: In Bulgaria, shaking your head in a "no" motion can be misinterpreted as a "yes," so be careful.
Respect religious traditions: Bulgaria is a predominantly Christian country, so it's important to be respectful of religious practices.
Dress well: Bulgarians generally dress smartly, especially in urban areas, so it's important to dress neatly.
