Population of approximately 600,000. The majority of the population resides on Santiago Island, where the capital Praia is located.

The official language is Portuguese, but Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu) is widely spoken in daily life.

The capital is Praia, located on the island of Santiago. Other major cities include Mindelo (Sao Vicente Island), Espargos (Sal Island), and Santa Maria (Sal Island).

A blend of African, Portuguese, and Brazilian influences. Music and dance are central to the culture, with Morna (a melancholic, guitar-based music) and Funan (accordion-driven dance music) being popular. The country celebrates Carnival and various religious festivals.

Cape Verdean Escudo (CVE) The escudo is not freely convertible outside the country but is pegged to the euro.

Seafood-heavy cuisine with influences from Portugal and West Africa. Popular dishes: Cachupa (a slow-cooked stew with corn, beans, and meat or fish), Pastel com diablo dentro (fried pastry with spicy tuna), and Grogue (a local sugarcane liquor).

Tropical and arid. The islands have a warm climate with little rainfall, except during the brief rainy season from August to October. Trade winds keep temperatures moderate year-round.

Limited native wildlife due to its island geography. Notable species include the Cape Verde warbler, loggerhead sea turtles, humpback whales, and geckos.

Cultural Considerations

Dress casually: While casual attire is common, its polite to dress modestly when attending public events or visiting churches.
Greeting customs: A handshake or a kiss on the cheek (for women) is typical when meeting people.
Be respectful of elders: Elders hold high respect in Cabo Verdean society, and its customary to greet them first.
